Pet Insurance - Advertising and Rewards for Missing Pets

Finding out that a pet has gone missing is a very traumatic experience for the owner. Not knowing whether the animal is alive or dead, or whether they'll ever see them again is hard to take. Some pet owners compare the suffering they endure as similar to if they had lost a member of their own immediate family.

While there's little that can be done to dull the emotional pain, there is much positive action that can be taken to find and retrieve the animal. Placing lost pet advertising in the local newspapers together with a photo of the missing animal can help. If people have seen the animal they can contact you directly or via the newspaper. Owners can also consider printing up posters with a photo of the lost pet and asking local shops and businesses to place the poster in their windows. It's another avenue open to keeping the missing pet in the public eye; and the more you can do that the greater are your chances of recovering your pet quickly and with the minimum of hassle.

Offering a reward

As a way to speed up the retrieval process it can sometimes help to offer a reward for the safe return of your pet, or for information that leads to their safe recovery. If you have reason to believe that your animal has been stolen you should contact the police before offering a reward. The police should be able to advise you on how to approach the situation, as well as helping you to open up other lines of inquiry that could lead to the safe recovery of your stolen animal without the need to commit to paying a reward.

How much you put up for reward is entirely up to you. Some pet owners have put up as little as £50 or £100, while others have gone to extremes of several thousand pounds - or even tens of thousands of pounds in circumstances where rare of prestigious pet breeds have gone missing.

Footing the bill

Newspaper advertising…posters…a reward for the return of your pet…it all costs money. That said, you might not have to foot all of the bill yourself if you have got a pet insurance policy in place. Your pet insurance policy could cover part or all of your pet's retrieval costs. This might include a pay out up to a set amount for advertising plus additional funds to help with payment of a reward.

Normally, insurance cover for advertising and rewards is included as standard with a pet insurance policy. You may however be eligible to select different levels of cover based on the amount you want to have accessible for these costs should you ever make a claim.
