Pet Insurance - Holiday Cancellation Cover

Holiday cancellations happen for any number of reasons. Those that are attributed to poor health or to other emergency circumstances, such as a death in the family, are normally covered by travel insurance. A claim would be lodged with the insurer and, if approved, the claimant would receive reimbursement of eligible costs up to the maximum stated amount on the policy.

However, there are instances where travel insurance simply won't cover the bases. This is especially true for holiday cancellations due to loss, illness or injury of your pet. Standard travel insurance is not likely to offer cover for such circumstances -- or if they do it will be for the loss of your pet only. You'd then have to choose whether to go on holiday regardless, or lose some or all of the money that you've already paid out for your trip. Either way you could be left with a bitter taste in your mouth.

A travel insurance solution for pet owners

Pet insurance that includes holiday cancellation cover due to loss, illness or injury of a pet is the best solution for pet owners when going on holiday. The policy would enable you to reclaim back costs that you might not be eligible to claim through your travel insurance. This will normally be travel and accommodation expenses -- flights, hotel costs, car hire, taxi, train costs etc. -- that are directly related to the cancellation or curtailment of your holiday because of your pet's plight. Essentially, your pet insurance policy with holiday cancellation acts as a second tier of insurance. Anything not claimed on the travel insurance will be 'hoovered up' by your pet insurance policy, allowing you to cover 100% of your expenses.

Basic holiday cancellation cover is normally included with standard pet insurance policies. You'll normally have access to reimbursements of between £500 and £1,000 plus the option to activate a claim at up to 7 days before you depart for your holiday -- very useful if your pet becomes clinically ill or injured in the last few days leading up to your holiday.

Where insurers offer a selection of pet insurance packages you'll most likely find that the more comprehensive options include a higher level of reimbursement -- perhaps up to £4,000 or more. They may also extend the pre-holiday period in which a claim can be made for holiday cancellation. Some insurers offer coverage for up to 28 days before departure.

Holiday curtailment

If you have to come home early from your holiday because of loss, illness or injury to your pet, holiday cancellation cover can help you account for the costs of doing so. You may be able to claim back prepaid accommodation fees equivalent to the nights that you lose out on. You'll also be able to claim for the cost of any extra flights that you have to book, and for unscheduled transfers to and from the airports.
