Increase in Death to Pets on Britain’s Roads
Owners Encouraged to Fit Their Pets with Reflective Collars and Jackets to Make Them Safer this Winter
A new press release has emerged from pet insurer MORE TH>N in the last few days that details a worrying new trend regarding the nation’s pets and our roads. It is already a given that with darker nights pets are more likely to be involved in accidents at this time of year but a study by the insurance company demonstrated that last year’s equivalent period saw 59% more claims than the prior months.
As a result MORE TH>N has launched a campaign to bring awareness to this issue in an effort to stop this 59% rise in deaths during the period between November and January. This includes encouraging owners to fit their pets with high visibility collars and jackets. On top of this, ensuring that owners have an adequate pet insurance plan in place would also be beneficial as it naturally provides a safety net of sorts if an accident is to take place, potentially leaving owners without the prospect of a high veterinary bill.
The study also looked at specific locations in the United Kingdom where pets were more likely to involved in accidents on the road. The top five such places were Ilford, Carlisle, Huddersfield, Halifax and Sutton.
“It’s an unfortunate fact that during the dark winter days our dogs and cats are not as visible to motorists,” said John Ellenger, MORE TH>N’s Head of Pet Insurance. “However, a simple reflective pet collar or vest can help make all the difference. Having the right insurance policy for your pet will also give financial peace of mind should an accident happen and treatment is needed.”
The study involved looking at the claims database from MORE TH>N, specifically at claims made between November and January.
It goes to show that there is always a reason to ensure that adequate pet insurance is in place and as we are now in November and the winter continues for the months ahead it is just as important as ever.
